George Ridgway's artistic practice is deeply intertwined with how we relate to expanded notions of place and their ecological webs. Ridgway is currently participating in North AiR network’s pilot residency Expanding Entanglements, which will take him to Mustarinda, Bioart Society and KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre to research within local ecosystems and landscapes.

Ridgway begun his 3-month residency at Mustarinda where he has been “focusing his time thinking through and researching around ideas of entanglement, and an entangled mesh of relationships between place, ecology and ways of knowledge and story gathering --  working around drawing, sound recording and walking.”

Next, Ridgway will continue to Ars Bioarctica at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station, and to KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre in Ii.

North AiR: Expanding Entanglements aims to reconsider conventional artist exchange models and question the role of artists’ residency in this time of climate breakdown. It seeks to explore the multiple knotted knowledges and practices situated between ecology, location, community and history in order to share and learn from these relationships. The residency does not seek final outcomes but looks for applied and expansive research into the above ideas and questions. The localised nature, ecology, and society, as well as the scientific environment and infrastructure of the programme is intended to act as a catalyst for North AiR: Expanding Entanglements.

North AiR is a network made up of Bioart Society, KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre, Mustarinda, Scottish Sculpture Workshop, Taigh Chearsabhagh (with support from the University of the Highlands and Islands) and Timespan. This programme is supported by The Finnish Institute in London and their Mobius Fellowship Programme.

All Bioart Society Events have free entry. Welcome!
